Carina, the mother of Candelaria, reflects on how paediatric palliative care has been a crucial support for her family during their challenging journey.
Candelaria, born extremely prematurely with ongoing health complications, has a severe disability and is fully dependent on care. Carina is her primary caregiver, handling all her needs.
In her words, “From the bottom of my heart, we have so much to be grateful for. The paediatric palliative care team has helped us tremendously, providing not only medical care but also emotional and humane support.”
Carina emphasises how the team stood by them during the most difficult moments, offering guidance that extended beyond treatment. “They helped us understand Candelaria’s situation and explain it to the rest of the family, which was hard for us to do.”
Carina calls for greater access to these services: “More resources are needed so that other families can receive the support we’ve had. These teams are essential and open doors to solutions we never knew existed.”
