Monica Baker runs the London Marathon to raise funds for children’s palliative care

The London Marathon is an annual event held in London, United Kingdom. The marathon is typically held in April, but this year it has moved to October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an ultimate athletic experience along a 26.2 miles course that brings an opportunity to run for a great cause.

Monica Baker will be running the marathon and she chose to support children’s palliative care through the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN). Babies, children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions have very specific and unique palliative care needs, often different to those of adults. There are over 21 million children worldwide who need palliative care and 8 million of those need specialised end-of-life care.

Support Monica by raising her morale as she prepares for the marathon and raising funds by making a donation. Whatever amount you give will make a difference in the lives of children and young people living with palliative care needs. Monica is very excited and energised for the marathon.

She expresses her reason to participate in her own words below

“There are lots of reasons to run a marathon. I have personally run 16 marathons, but none of them has meant more to me than this one. I am running for a very special cause …… the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN). So many children are needlessly suffering around the globe – the biggest problem they have is not having access to medical care that could help address this suffering. I am hoping that by running the London Marathon I can help bring awareness to this special cause – ICPCN and the suffering children it represents.”

As a mother of four and an elementary school teacher, the training for a marathon by itself requires a major commitment of time, energy and sweat. I just recently ran a 17-mile training run and I was not sure I would make it; in fact, I almost passed out multiple times. Thinking about ICPCN and the kids and families I am running for definitely helped me pull through and will help me stay inspired as I train for and run the London Marathon. Please partner with me as I run as a charity runner in support of ICPCN! It is such an honor to run in support of this life changing organisation for a mission I am so passionate about.  See you at the finish line.”
