Compassion in Action: Transforming the Lives of Children and Families

Authors: Gabriela García-Durán and Alex Daniels

Together, we can build a more compassionate world for every child. Welcome aboard.

Every day, children living with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families endure pain, uncertainty, isolation, and profound suffering. Behind every diagnosis is a child with dreams, fears, relationships, and a life that deserves to be lived to the fullest. Behind every child is a family navigating one of the most difficult journeys imaginable. And behind every family is an opportunity for a healthcare professional to listen, comfort, advocate, and act.

This belief lies at the heart of Compassion in Action (CIA), an innovative global learning programme presented in two complementary courses, developed by the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) and inspired by the World Health Organization’s guide, Integrating Palliative Care and Symptom Relief into Paediatrics. CIA builds on a two-part webinar series hosted by ICPCN that explored the implementation of the WHO guide in practice.

Children’s palliative care (CPC) remains one of the most neglected areas of global health. Millions of children could benefit from palliative care, yet most never receive it. Many healthcare professionals have little formal training, while families often struggle to access essential medicines, support services, and appropriate care. The result is avoidable suffering and missed opportunities to improve quality of life.

Compassion in Action was created to help change this reality.

Rather than presenting information through traditional lectures alone, the programme transforms learning into an engaging, interactive experience. Participants explore stories, real-world scenarios, reflection exercises, and practical activities that encourage them to challenge assumptions, identify barriers, and develop solutions relevant to their own settings. Understanding palliative care is important—but transforming care requires action.

The programme comprises two complementary courses that provide a comprehensive learning journey. Foundations of CPC introduces the essential principles and practices of high-quality care, including models of care, communication, symptom management, family-centered care, education, and quality of life. Through interactive learning and practical examples, participants build a strong foundation while developing a deeper understanding of the unique needs of children with serious health conditions.

The second course, Advancing CPC, expands the conversation beyond the bedside to focus on advocacy, access to essential medicines, health system integration, research, quality improvement, and WHO policies and resources. Learners explore how evidence, leadership, and collaboration can strengthen services and improve access to care for children and families worldwide.

One of the programme’s most distinctive features is its educational philosophy. CPC cannot be learned through facts alone. It requires empathy, communication, reflection, critical thinking, and courage. Each module combines expert-led teaching with interactive activities, clinical scenarios, practical challenges, downloadable resources, and opportunities for reflection that encourage participants to ask not only What do I know? but also What matters most? What could be better? and What role can I play?

Designed for a global audience, Compassion in Action recognises that children who need palliative care live in every country, community, and healthcare system. Whether you are a doctor, nurse, psychologist, social worker, pharmacist, educator, researcher, community health worker, student, volunteer, family caregiver, policymaker, or service leader, these courses offer practical knowledge and skills adaptable to diverse settings.

At its heart, Compassion in Action is about possibility—the possibility of relieving suffering, improving quality of life, and creating healthcare systems where children and families receive the support they deserve. It transforms WHO guidance into learning, reflection, leadership, collaboration, advocacy, and meaningful action.

Because every child deserves more than treatment. Every child deserves comfort, dignity, connection, and hope. Every family deserves support, understanding, and compassionate care. And every professional has the power to help make that possible.
