Imagine the first breath of a newborn. For most, it represents hope and life; for some, it marks the beginning of a journey characterized by immense and profound pain. In that moment, the difference between suffering and dignity depends on the expertise and sensitivity of those who accompany the family. This leads us to the question: are we truly ready to support families during the most vulnerable moments of their lives?

Every year, more than two million babies die before their first month of life (World Health Organization, 2023). Neonatal palliative care (NPC) provides holistic, multi-disciplinary care for babies and their families following antenatal or postnatal diagnosis of life-limiting conditions, providing integrated ongoing support through pregnancy, delivery, postnatal care, and where appropriate, continuing bereavement care. However, NPC is much more than medical techniques: it involves presence, attentive listening, and compassion. Sadly, this much needed approach to care remains an invisible specialty in many health systems.

Educational Innovation for a Global Challenge

The ICPCN offer two online courses on NPC, an Introductory course and an Enhanced course. The Introductory course launched in 2021 is now available in Spanish, as well as English and French. Led  by Alex Mancini-Smith, this programme not only imparts knowledge but also invites personal and professional transformation.

Alex Mancini-Smith is a senior neonatal nurse with over 30 years of experience in the field and currently serve as National Lead for Neonatal Palliative Care in the United Kingdom. The course offers an invaluable perspective, the result of decades of practice, dedication and innovation.

Comprised of five comprehensive modules, the course covers everything from the fundamentals of neonatal palliative care to professional self-care. Each module is an invitation to look beyond the diagnosis and connect with what truly matters.

Learning outcomes align with the Children’s Palliative Care Education Standard Framework (CPCET). By the end of the course, participants will have an:

  • Increased awareness and understanding of self-care and the care of colleagues.
  • Improved understanding of key principles in Neonatal Palliative Care.
  • Improved understanding of how to apply those principles and philosophy of care within an acute critical care setting.
  • Improved understanding of what services and resources are available to families and how to access them.
  • Improved understanding of robust collaboration across local services ensuring an individualised continuum of care whilst sharing good practice for equitable care.

For the Entire Healthcare Team

This introductory course is designed for the entire healthcare team: doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and any professional who accompanies newborns and their families during critical times.

The value of this course lies not only in its content but also in its methodology: real cases, reflective exercises, and interactive resources that challenge professionals to reinvent their practice. At the end of each module there is a short list of multiple-choice questions and upon successful completion of all 5 sets of questions, a certificate of completion will be issued. The availability of the course in Spanish democratizes access and allows thousands of Spanish-speaking professionals to join a global network of compassionate care.

Beyond Training: A Movement for Change

This course is much more than training; it is a call to action. It is the opportunity to turn pain into companionship, uncertainty into clarity, and loneliness into community. Every professional trained in NPC becomes an agent of hope, capable of transforming the experiences of families and colleagues.

Enrollment is simple, free, and open on the ICPCN Education and Membership Hub website: https://www.elearnicpcn.org. By joining, you not only acquire knowledge; you embrace a philosophy of care that can change the course of thousands of lives.
